Depart for Ha long Bay in a private air conditioned vehicle. Transfer to a private boat for a cruise among the 3, 000 spectacular limestone islands that rise from the emerald green waters of Ha Long Bay. The boat is one of the more traditional varieties that sail through the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch on board while the captain heads out for the horizon. Cruise to Quan Lan via the lesser known but equally magnificent Bai Tu Long bay with breathtaking scenery and thousands of limestone outcrops. There will be time to enjoy kayaking after lunch. Arrive at Quan Lan late afternoon. Stroll into the main village port Cai Bau. Dinner is served on board. 2 hours kayaking. Overnight in bungalow.

Day 2: Quan Lan Island (B, L, D)

After breakfast, explore desolate Quan Lan Island with its stunning deserted sandy beaches. Quan Lan has lots of history dating back to the Mongols. Its’ people are friendly and way of life relaxed. There are many things to do on the island. There are five pristine beaches to discover, the best being Son Ha beach, (7km from the main village Cai Bau), with incredible white sands. Optional cycle on a flat single lane country road to the northern village on the island, Minh Chau. There are also three 7km trekking routes — along the spine of the island on a great footpath over the mountains to the South, along a rocky coastline facing the sea, or more gently along a jeep trail on the opposite coast facing inland. In the afternoon sail to nearby Thang Loi Island. 2 hours kayaking. Overnight in bungalow.

Day 3: Quan Lan Island - Ha Long Bay - Hanoi (B, L)

After breakfast, cruise to Trong and Trinh Nu caves. Paddle for three hours among the karst scenery near to the caves. Trong and Trinh Nu caves can also be explored by foot. They are seldom visited by tourists, and are therefore truly off the beaten path. Return to the boat for lunch on board. After lunch cruise further through the bay stopping to kayak inside Luon cave (tunnel cave). This cave is rather like Tam Coc but without the tourists - very peaceful and quiet: Paddle through the tunnel and emerge into a crater lake, surrounded by impenetrable cliffs and gliding kites. (The kayak through the tunnel is dependent on tidal conditions.) Another scrumptious lunch will be served on board then cruise via Ha long Bay back to shore. Arrive late afternoon and transfer directly to Hanoi. 3 hours kayaking.
